Leave it to Beaver's Barbara Billingsley Dies at 94

One of television's all time greatest moms has passed away. Barbara Billingsley, known to TV fans everywhere for her portrayal of June Cleaver on the classic series Leave it to Beaver, died Saturday at the age of 94. Billingsley's other credits include the voice of Nanny in the 1980s Saturday morning cartoon Muppet Babies and a memorable appearance in the 1980 comedy Airplane!

In a 2006 interview with Just My Show, Leave it To Beaver co-star Tony Dow described his TV mother as "the greatest person in the world."

"The thing that's funny about Barbara," observed Dow, "is that, you know, she always gets tagged with the fact that she was always at home vacuuming in high heels and pearls and, you know, what mother did that? And, you know, it set the woman's movement back years, when in fact, obviously she was working. She was a working mother. She was the opposite from, you know, that character."

Happy 20th Beverly Hills, 90210!

Fire up a Mega Burger and raise a glass (just not on prom night) to the gang from West Beverly High. It was 20 years ago this very evening that Beverly Hills, 90210 made its debut on Fox. Despite its massive success though, the series didn't start off as a D'Shawn Hardell slam dunk (or Joe Bradley touchdown - choose your 90210 sports metaphor).

"A lot of people don't remember this about 90210, but the first year it was on, it was dead last in the ratings," remembered actor Matthew Laurance on Just My Show show back in 2006. "It almost didn't get picked up after the first season."

There was a fan base building though, that the numbers weren't picking up on. Laurance, who played the recurring role of Dr. Mel Silver recalled, "They asked Luke [Perry] to go down to Miami or somewhere in Florida and do a personal appearance and he got to this shopping mall and there was something like 15,000 people there, and all of a sudden Fox said 'Wait a minute. Somebody's watching this show,' and they started to promote it really heavily and they showed first run episodes during that summer when no other shows were, and all of a sudden it turned into this huge hit."

"It just hit at a time when the culture was changing to where, you know, all the stuff that was shown on that show was really starting to get important," Laurance concludes. "It just struck a chord with...it started out probably with high school kids, but after that it turned into a whole phenomenon, as you know, that was really unlike anything that i've seen."

So here's to Brandon, Brenda, Dylan, Kelly, Steve, David and Andrea. And here's to Jimbo, Cindy and Nat. And what the heck, here's to Emily Valentine, Jesse Vasquez, Ray Pruit and the late Scott Scanlon...bless his soul. Don't play with guns, kids.

Namely Nostalgic: A Voice Worth Hearing

1984 was the year that Michael Winslow broke out on the scene as the character Larvell Jones in the movie Police Academy. Subsequently, he has become one of the most sought after and talented vocal impressionists in the world. His ability at recreating sounds is stunningly accurate.

His vocal effects vary from soaring airplanes, machine guns, closing doors and squeaky chairs to musical instruments such as dead on accurate drum effects, the violin and the harmonica to animals such as bees buzzing, horses galloping and dogs barking. His vocal range can reach deep bass levels all the way up to the piercingly high pitch.

He has a great ear for accents from countries all over the world and has a roster of celebrity impressions including Cheech and Chong and Jimi Hendrix. In fact his impression of Wolfman Jack is the best I've heard since Johnny Brown AKA Nathan Bookman did his own version on the talent show episode of Good Times where JJ stole the scene during a set of stand up.

It takes a certain accurately perceptive ear and mailable vocal cords to be able to pull off duplicating sounds of other things and other people with such realistic results. There are of course others with Winslow's abilities. Dee Bradley Baker comes to mind. But from what I can gather nobody has presented their talents in terms of quantity and caliber that has outweighed Winslow's. And that became evident recently when I came across a video from the official Michael Winslow channel on YouTube where he does the entire history of the

sounds that typewriters have made over the years.

Who else but Michael Winslow would even attempt such a feat? And who else could pull it off so entertainingly?

In 2009, "Married With Children" star David Faustino partnered with "Parker Lewis" star Corin Nemec for the web based series "Star-ving." The show chronicles the daily unfortunate downtrodden lifestyle of Faustino's self-titled character in his hopes for making both an entertainment and financial comeback. His days on "Married With Children" unfortunately didn't leave him with the kind of opportunity as he would have hoped for after such a successful run.

"Star-ving" is partly biographical and partly fictionalized. It's over-the-top ridiculous at times yet consistently, charmingly entertaining. During the eleven episodes such guest stars included former co-star Ed O'Neill (who can be seen on the great ABC show Modern Family) along with the rest of the main cast of "Married With Children", as well as Coolio, Gilbert Gottfried, Alan Thicke and the list continues.

If you've been wondering what Faustino has been up to these years and are disappointing he's not doing more, I think you'll get a real kick out of this series. Each episode is between five and eight minutes. It's enough time to get your laughs in without the risk of overstaying its welcome. A new season is certainly welcomed.

I find it interesting when you come across those with talent and creativity exhibiting their gifts in multiple forms. For those with such abilities, it must be a relief to be able to express themselves in changing ways and find similar if not equal satisfaction in both. As rewarding as it is to obtain pleasure, recognition and praise in one field, to receive it in two is presumably more fulfilling. One of the best examples of this is with the actor/comedian Martin Mull.

I was first introduced to him, like many others, on the sitcom Roseanne. Mull played the title character's boss Leon Carp for six seasons. Before and since then he has provided his talents in an impressive number of sitcoms as well as voice over work in cartoons. His comedic talents on the stage go back even further in time; including his collaboration with fellow actor/comedian Fred Willard. However, it is also his talent as an artist that really casts him into a category reserved for those true interpreters of the scenic world.

After visiting the Hammer Gallery online, which showcases some of Mull's work, I think you'll come away with the understanding that Martin Mull has an incredibly gifted talent at portraying his own interpretations of the everyday in a blissfully skillful way that certainly owes its execution to the steady hand and eye of both the well trained and naturally blessed artist. But actually it wasn't until I sat down and watched a fantastic interview Mull did with my new favorite interviewer that I was able to get the whole story.

That interviewer is the talented Kevin Pollak. As a gifted vocal impressionist and actor, Pollak has had me fixated on his little slice of the entertainment world online in what he calls his Chat Show. If you have any interest in learning about the artistic career of Martin Mull, in all of its forms, and the careers of dozens and dozens of other talented and creative people, stop by his official web site. The link is for Martin Mull's interview, but you'll also find a drop down list of all of Pollak's chat shows. What you will come away with is the awareness that talented and creative people do often express their abilities in more than the one form you are probably most familiar with. And that is something that I think is an interesting and exciting realization.

Tommy Solomon was the youngest member in human form of the Solomon family. He was, however, the oldest in alien form. The show was 3rd Rock From The Sun and the actor who played Tommy was Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The show lasted for six seasons and during its run, Gordon-Levitt picked up a number of award nominations and a couple victories. Before 3rd Rock, he kept busy on various sitcoms and movies as a child actor. In the nine years since 3rd Rock went off the air, he has continued to keep busy working mostly in film.

Not too long ago I came across a project that Gordon-Levitt has been working on for a number of years now. It's an online site called hitRECord (http://hitrecord.org) where he deals with joint ventures in creative productions of original content. It's a fully interactive, ongoing site with a community of regular, everyday people contributing short length video and animation, story ideas, pictures and music with the ambition to have other viewers watch and listen and then collaborate on everyone's ideas. It's an impressive, adventurous web site that Gordon-Levitt runs and what I like about it is that whenever a great idea comes to the surface and Gordon-Levitt sees real potential in it, he then personally gets involved with the project and begins the process of turning it into a money-making creation.

The most popular production so far is a series called "Morgan M. Morganson." Gordon-Levitt both narrates and acts in what has now become two different short films. The short titled "Morgan M. Morganson's Date With Destiny" was shown at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The finished, collaborative film is artistic both visually and verbally and I really enjoyed it. If it's any indication as to the quality of ideas and production of future projects, I can certainly say that I look forward to more and more of what Gordon-Levitt and his community can come up with.

Diff'rent Strokes Co-Star Recalls Gary Coleman was "A Joy to Work With"

If you're a Diff'rent Strokes fan, you'll remember actress Mary Jo Catlett as Drummond houseekeeper Pearl Gallagher. This morning, Catlett sent Just My Show the following thoughts about Gary Coleman:

"If his stature were measured in talent, he would have been the tallest man in the world. He gave so much happiness to his fans and was a joy to work with. When I was first starting on "Diff'rent Strokes" they had been doing the show for four years and each of them knew their roles backwards and forwards so I was nervous. Gary saw this and came over to me and said 'don't worry, that's the good thing about television, we can do it over.' And he was funny, about three weeks ago he did an interview and was asked 'Do you think there's a curse connected with the cast of Diff'rent Strokes?' He said 'No, unless Mary Jo Catlett goes to jail for a drug overdose'. Now that's funny, and I was glad he had me on his mind, a very fine mind it was."

Producer, writer and creator of such classic shows as Who's The Boss, Silver Spoons and Diff'rent Strokes, Martin Cohan, died on May 19th. He was 77. One has to wonder how the 1980's TV line up would've looked without these three gems. Of the three, Who's The Boss is the show I remember most specifically watching. One of those classic episodes written by Cohan was the one where Jonathan went to sleep away camp over the summer and Angela and Tony found out that as children, also at that sleep away camp, they had their first kiss together over at Kissing Rock where Tony carved their names in a tree.

Certainly all three shows had their cheesy, hokey moments, but there was something always entertaining and fun about them. Just like with every TV show, at the forefront of it all is the quality of the writing. Without well crafted scripts, even a strong ensemble won't last. Martin Cohan was just one of those strong, creative writers. Other examples of his talent for the pen can be seen on shows like All In The Family and The Odd Couple.

Very often TV writers don't get the recognition by the public that they deserve. Actors are the salesmen of entertainment. Writers are the inventors. Both play their roles and if they play them well, a show will find success. Success like Martin Cohan found during his long TV career.

Namely Nostalgic: Songs In Sitcoms

It’s always a treat when a sitcom is able to incorporate music into the subject of the episode. There is something about a good song that can take a moment of action and expand it to a more significant level. It certainly makes the scene stand out years later.

Some examples include The Eagles song "Desperado" on Seinfeld, Don Henley's "New York Minute" on Friends, one of the most iconic being George Thorogood's "Bad To The Bone" on Married With Children and even Uncle Jesse's cover of The Beach Boys song "Forever" on Full House. However, the best example of songs in sitcoms came from the show The Wonder Years.

No, it wasn’t essential for the show to do it, since the writing was so strong, but the music certainly added another layer of sentiment and relevance. The one song that stands out most vividly in my mind is “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes. It was played on the episode with guest actress Julie Condra during a pizza shop scene. She played the character Madeline Adams who had become a romantic interest for Kevin Arnold. As it turned out, she also became the romantic interest for the millions of adolescent male viewers who looked forward to the handful of episodes she graced the screen with.

Hearing that song being played really amplified the condition of the moment. But quite frankly, The Wonder Years had unraveled so many of those relatable growing up moments and made them even more poignant because of the songs that were tied to them.

With recent news that Winnie Cooper actress Danica McKeller is expecting a baby, you can’t help but feel happy for the quintessential girl-next-door.

It’s interesting how the element of music is the one thing that is halting the sale of the show on DVD. Hopefully one day we’ll have The Wonder Years in our collection. It'll once again give the fans that chance at reliving their own past through the lives of the characters that represented us all. That's what a good show can do for those watching. And when a song can be nestled in, it just makes it even more memorable. There are of course plenty of other examples of songs in sitcoms that I’m sure you the reader can think of that helped the episode along. Have at it.

Bob Minor Has Some Major Skills

He had the very first spoken line in The Greatest American Hero, a point that I had to call to Bob Minor's attention as we recorded his cameo in Just My Show's most recent podcast. If Minor wasn't aware of that little piece of personal trivia though, we'll give him a pass considering he has an IMDB credits list that could kill a small rainforest to print.

"That was an exciting show for me to do and I had a chance to drive the four wheeler," remembers Minor of the Greatest American Hero pilot. "It was just great." Seeing as his character was killed in the opening scenes of the show, it was the only episode he'd appear in, and it pales in comparison to another first. Minor, who broke into show business as a stuntman, became the first black member of the Stuntmen's Association in 1972.

Minor's first stunt credit came on Russ Meyer's 1970 film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which spring boarded a career that includes the Ed Zwick directed civil war epic Glory and a long run as Roger E. Mosley's stunt double on the classic series Magnum P.I., during which he lived in Hawaii nine months out of the year.

While stunt coordinator on Magnum, Minor did everything from crash cars to hang from a helicopter as it flew over water. It was on the set of the 1975 film Let's Do it Again though, that he pulled off his toughest challenge. As stunt double for Sidney Poitier, Minor had to jump 18 and a half feet from one building to another. "I threw my arms and my head up in the air and bicycled my way through the sky," he recalls. It's a stunt, he of course, wasn't able to fully enjoy until he landed. "I was so glad. I felt so good and the crowd went crazy."

It was on the set of a Martin Sheen film that Minor picked up the acting bug. After landing a small part in the movie, he enrolled in acting school, going on on to rack up a long list of TV and film credits including a substantial roll as "Gamble" in the 1988 box office hit Action Jackson.

If acting and stunt work weren't enough, Minor has also worked as a second unit director and competed in body building events after a friend convinced him to start training. Not only did he take that friend up on the suggestion, but he beat him to win his first competition. "My bodybuilding got me a lot of parts because they wanted big guys and things like that," says Minor, who also took runner up in Mr. Venice Beach. One of the judges in that contest: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

There have been tougher times for Minor, who suffered a serious injury while turning over a car during the filming of Blues Brothers 2000. "People thought I did not make it," he says. "I did everything perfect," he maintains. "It was just one of those deals."

Minor was knocked unconscious and suffered a frontal lobe injury which affected his short term memory to the point that he couldn't remember the countless people who came to visit him once they left. He does know of one person who was at his bedside though: his old Magnum pal Tom Selleck.

Minor would spend months in the hospital relearning basic skills like reading and writing. "It was almost like starting from the beginning," he remembers. He persevered though, and not only got back on his feet, but got back to work almost two years later playing Usher's father in the 1999 film Light it Up. "With the love of God and my friends, I was able to beat the odds on that and I made it," he reflects.

Not only has Bob Minor made it, but he's still going strong. Look for him along with Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Danny Glover in Death at a Funeral opening April 15...and if you haven't already, catch him in the latest episode of Just My Show.

The events kick off today, but it was 30 years ago this month, that a team of U.S. amateur hockey players went to the 1980 games in Lake Placid and pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.

"As the Olympics roll around, we get excited about it, at least I do" Dave Silk told Just My Show about his role in the Miracle on Ice, which Sports Illustrated called the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. Don't read about it though. Ralphie's House Rocks Cleveland

Put this in the blog category of "ideas I wish I'd come up with."

Five years ago, Brian Jones was selling leg lamps like the one seen in the modern holiday classic A Christmas Story. "Leg lamps were selling much better than I thought they ever wood, Jones told Just My Show earlier this month. "I thought it was just gonna be like a side business little hobby." So when he saw the Cleveland location used as Ralphie's house in the 1983 film go up for sale on eBay, he did what any good fan of the movie would do. He bought it.

"There were obviously times where I thought to myself, 'what have I gotten myself into?' halfway through the project," said Jones. But he stuck with it, restoring the house to A Christmas Story form, and opening it up to the public in November of 2006. His visitors have increased each year since, as has the operation. He now owns another home on the street, which houses a museum and gift shop. This year, you can stop by and see Ralphie's costumes from the movie, which Jones recently purchased.

Several members of the film's cast have stopped by including Just My Show guest Scott Schwartz who played Flick. "I got Ian Patrella, who played Randy-the little brother, to get back underneath the sink and we got a picture of him there," recalls Jones. "I thought that was pretty funny."

This year, Jones is paying tribute to another modern classic by lighting up Ralphie's house like the Griswold's in honor of the 20th anniversary of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. "Christmas Vacation" Director "Very Very Proud" 20 Years Later

"In my heart of hearts, I always wanted to make a timeless movie and a classic movie, but really, I just wanted to make a funny movie," Christmas Vacation director Jeremiah Chechik told Just My Show. Twenty years to the day after it opened in U.S. theaters, he seems to have done all of the above.

Chechik followed in the footsteps of 80s film icons Harold Ramis and Amy Heckerling to helm the third installment of the National Lampoon series. It was the very first feature he directed before racking up a list of credits including Benny & Joon and The Bronx is Burning. Not a bad way to start. "I just consider it just very good fortune," he told me on the eve of the anniversary.

"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving's" Sally "Very Grateful" to be Part of History

"I just feel like I was a part of magic," Hilary Momberger told Just My Show earlier this week. As a kid, Momberger provided the voice of Sally in several Peanuts cartoons - most notably, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, which is set to air tomorrow night at 8pm on ABC.

These days, Momberger is a model and script supervisor, with a long list of credits including Being John Malkovich, Gray's Anatomy and The West Wing. No matter what she's doing now though, she's still appreciative of her involvement in the 1973 holiday classic: "Looking back, being a part of history...such an amazing cartoon. I feel very grateful."

Dr. Mel Silver "Very Upset" About Jackie Taylor's Passing on 90210 Spin-Off

In case any old school 90210 fans aren't staying up to date with the WB spin-off, here' something that might get your attention. Jackie Taylor is dead! One of the few original characters in the current show, Jackie passed away in this week's episode with Kelly and Erin by her side. Given the gravity of the situation, Just My Show couldn't help but place a call to our old friend Matthew Laurance, better known as Jackie's ex, Dr. Mel Silver.

You didn't hear it Tuesday night on the WB, but you'll hear it here: "I was very upset to hear about Jackie's passing," Dr. Mel told me. "It's almost too emotional for me to talk about." As for their rocky past, he went on to say, "I've always regretted and been deeply upset by what happened between us."

Bud Collins "Applauds" Agassi on Just My Show

Andre Agassi used drugs. Drugs are bad. "I learned it by watching you!" We all get it. (The kid from the PSA was a guest on this show!) But now it's time for the tennis world to get real. Andre Agassi didn't bring shame to the world of tennis. To the contrary, he brought main street popularity to the game in the 80s and beyond for which many involved should be grateful.

Andre had a problem like many other people have a problem. Should he have lied about it to the ATP tour? No, but would you expect a regular person in the midst of that type of situation to act in any other way? Despite Martina Navratilova's irresponsible comparison to Roger Clemens, we're not talking about performance enhancing drugs. Navratilova has since clarified her comments to say that the comparison was not about the crime, but about the lies. Nobody likes a hall monitor, Martina. Yes, Andre should have technically missed matches for the failed drug test. Unless you show me that his actions in any way gave him an unfair advantage over the competition though, arguing over his record is pretty petty at this point. More than anyone else in the game, Andre hurt Andre.

There are some in the world of tennis, like Andy Roddick, who have given a more human reaction: "Andre is and always will be my idol. I will judge him on how he has treated me and how he has changed the world for (the) better." Well said Andy.

Now, a legendary tennis writer and broadcaster has weighed in with another well reasoned response. In a special commentary for Just My Show, Tennis Hall of Famer Bud Collins complimented Agassi for his honesty and praised him for his service to the community. "Who among us isn't without a bit of sin?" asked Collins. "Andre has gone from punk to paragon," he later said, going on to call him "A genuine humanitarian" for his work with kids in Las Vegas.

Taking on TV's Top Ten Themes

Thumbs up to Songfacts.com for being a fantastic website that gives you all kinds of cool info and stories behind your favorite music. Obviously, thumbs up to Songfacts for posting a transcript of my interview with Wang Chung's Jack Hues! And for sure, thumbs up to Songfacts for celebrating the lost art of the TV theme song with a list of their top ten. All that said, it's now time to attack Songfacts’ picks because that's half the fun of these lists!

"Up your nose with a rubber hose," Songfacts, for completely ignoring Welcome Back. To be clear, I'm not calling you out on this because John Sebastian was a guest on this podcast. Rather, John Sebastian was a guest on this podcast because he's a Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer who also happens to be responsible for arguably the best TV theme of all time. It's not only a great song, but a great song that managed to work in the concept of the show, while still standing on its own enough hit number one on the Billboard charts. It's a no brainer for the top ten, and while I do think it could stake a claim to the top spot, I'm not gonna be the guy to argue against Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Cheers’ theme is a classic right down to its rarely heard second and third versus, and to put all my cards on the table, I have repeatedly tried and failed to get singer/songwriter Gary Portnoy on Just My Show.

Speaking of podcast guests, I had a great chat with Samm Levine (AKA Neal Schweiber) a few years ago and am generally in favor of including Freaks and Geeks on any list, regardless of the category. It’s an interesting outside the box pick, and a solid song that fit perfectly on one of my absolute favorite series of all time. My only issue is that if you go down the road of making previously released songs eligible, I just don’t see how you can leave out With a Little Help From My Friends from The Wonder Years. By the way, speaking of Samm and the song, he just posted one of the best Tweets I’ve ever seen: “Watching Joan Jett sing Bad Reputation live. I feel like I'm back in fake high school for picture day.”

Here’s another oversight: On behalf of women everywhere, why no love for Love is All Around from Mary Tyler Moore? If you need to free up a spot, I’ll speculate that I’ll Be There For You was more of a vote for Friends than for the actual song. A good TV theme? Yes. Better than Those Were the Days from All in the Family? No. Better than Andy Travis’ perfectly told back story in WKRP in Cincinnati’s main theme? Not even close.

Now here’s some credit where it’s due for including some of the greats like Movin’ on Up from The Jeffersons, Good Ol’ Boys from The Dukes of Hazzard and for showing proper respect for the still catchy The Fishin’ Hole from The Andy Griffith Show (the one reason, far greater than hailing a cab, that I wish I could whistle).

So where’s Just My Show’s top ten list? Way too stressful! It’s much easier to criticize other people’s. Nice job SongFacts! Keep up the great work!

Remembering the King of Pop

Show Notes: While there's been no shortage of press coverage on the death of Michael Jackson, we would be shirking our responsibilities as the web's home of retro pop culture, if we didn't put together a fitting tribute of our own.

Steve Barron has directed the music videos for some of the biggest songs of the 80s (and a few films for that matter). For our purposes though, he was the guy behind the camera of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" video. You absolutely know this one...the sidewalk tiles lighting up as MJ dances along. It was a huge breakthrough moment in Michael's career and one of the early videos played on MTV, which you'll hear about. Steve was a cool guy to talk with and shared some very specific memories of working with Michael and making that video.

And while I failed to track down an American Family Publisher's Sweepstakes winner, I did catch up with a former Star Search champion and am glad we were able to get reaction to the passing of Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon.

Interview with Barry Williams AKA Greg Brady

Show Notes: This one was a long time in the making. I've done work over at Barry's site for a while, so it was nice to finally have him over here at JMS. We've met and spoken before, but not a whole lot and definitely not about The Brady Bunch to this extent.

This is a very tough one in that there's obviously not much he hasn't been asked before about the show. Plus, so much of it is covered in his book Growing up Brady. That said, he spoke with a lot of enthusiasm as if he was talking about some of this stuff for the first time, which I appreciated. He did a good job of expanding on ground that has been previously covered and spoke pretty openly about his and other cast member's feelings on being associated with the show. Bottom line, he's one of TV's most well known characters on a show that pretty much everyone grew up watching, so it was great to have him.

As the new format of the show develops, I'm really liking the news reads more and more. It's been a great way to cover more topics while still keeping the show to a reasonable time and also including some fun cameos. I'm hoping you guys liked the Saved by the Bell coverage, especially the commentary by the one and only Johnny Dakota, who was very cool to talk with. I plan on doing much more of that kind of thing as news permits.

Interview with Wang Chung Lead Singer Jack Hues

Show Notes: I had a lot of fun with this one. First of all, I had a good time listening to the music leading up to the interview and found out I knew and liked even more Wang Chung songs than I thought I did.

Once again, good guy. He really is. Doesn't take himself too seriously in terms of talking about Wang Chung, but at the same time had lots of interesting stuff to say about the music and the band. He was a good sport about talking about the name, which he's probably had to do thousands of times. Even cooler, he was a good sport about singing on the spot. It might not sound like a big deal, but singing even a line or two over a bad phone connection definitely isn't the ideal way to showcase your voice. A lot of people wouldn't do that.

Speaking of the phone connection, the audio probably wasn't quite as clear as usual on this one. That always bothers me, but in this case, I hope you'll be a little forgiving since he was coming to JMS from England. I know it's 2009 and that's not a huge deal, but there's still something kind of cool about it. Also cool, by the way, was that Jack seemed to get a kick out of the bonus clip I posted with the writer of the classic Wang Chung Cheers line.

Interview with Pop Rocks Pioneer Marv Rudolph

Show Notes: Still playing catch up on the show notes. Alright, Pop Rocks...I really like doing this kind of episode. Stuff like Pop Rocks, Underoos and Encyclopedia Brown might not get as many listener as the TV and movie related shows, but I think they give this site its character. The idea is to give you guys a mix of cool retro topics unlike anywhere else on the web.

As far as this particular interview goes, Marv brought a few different things to the table. One is that he was obviously there for the development of Pop Rocks so he could talk from first hand experience, which is what we like around here. On top of that though, because of his book, he's become a bit of a Pop Rocks historian and was able to fill in the pieces that he wasn't involved with. In this case, the full story spans a whole lot of years, so that was cool. And of course, he also has the chemistry background which is a first for this show and kind of fun to hear him explain the Pop Rocks explosion rumors from a scientific angle.

Interview with Stephen Furst of Animal House

Show Notes: Fell a little behind on the show notes. So, last week's podcast with Stephen Furst... What can you say? An incredibly memorable character in one of the all time great comedies. Not to mention one of the key roles in The Dream Team as well as St. Elsewhere, which we only touched on. Pretty much an ideal type of guest for this show.

Was there as much story telling and as many specific memories as the three shows before it? No. But then again, I feel like I'd gotten spoiled a few weeks in a row with guests who really brought the goods. And let's not forget, this movie was filmed over 35 years ago, so we're going back a little further. Also, it sounds like there was just less off camera antics than people might have expected from this movie. Or at least less that Stephen took part in anyway.

This type of interview is easy and hard at the same time in that it's such a classic with so many memorable moments, but at the same time, that makes it pretty tough to ask a lot of original questions. What was great about Stephen is that even though he's probably had to talk about a lot of this many times before, he still did it with a genuine enthusiasm. And there were definitely a few interesting things in there that I wasn't aware of...like the Animal House connection to his kidney transplant and the phone call he got from Belushi shortly before his death. Plus, he held his own with the trivia questions I threw at him. (shout out to my sister for the suggestion)

By the way, when I first talked with him, he told me one of the reasons he agreed to do this is because he has a podcast of his own and he knows what it's like to try to get guests to come on for interviews. So yeah, once again, really nice guy! Check out his podcast.

Interview with Jeremy Licht of The Hogan Family

Show Notes: Jeremy Licht is hands down one of the nicest people I've interviewed in the history of this show. I know I say nice things about most of my guests here in the blog, and I'm not lying. Most of the people I talk with for the show are incredibly cool, but Jeremy is an over the top good guy, which I hope comes through in the interview.

As far as the actual discussion goes, I've gotten spoiled lately. Once again, I lucked out with another guest who came in with a lot of enthusiasm (even though he's doing something very different these days) as well as a lot of good insight and specific memories. In fact, he cleared up a rumor or two that I haven't seen explained anywhere else on the web. If you're a fan of The Hogan Family, I think you'll really like this one. And by the way, just to add my two cents to the Valerie Harper discussion...I had the chance to interact with her very briefly when I was working on a project she was starring in. Interview with Jerry Levine of Teen Wolf

Show Notes: Jerry Levine has no reason to have to do an interview like this. The guy has a full plate directing TV shows, which he's done for years. Well known shows: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Monk, Everybody Hates Chris, Boy Meets World. I could go on.

What I'm saying here is that there are plenty of people in that situation who might act too cool to talk about an acting role they did very early in their career. It's very obvious though, that Jerry Levine still loves Stiles. At the very least, he seems cool with the fact that the movie's become a popular pop culture reference. He didn't try to drop in the fact that he's doing other things now. In fact, the only time he brought up his directing career without me asking is when he was telling a directing story that related to Teen Wolf.

The cool thing about this interview is that Jerry was pretty good on two fronts: talking in general terms about the success of the film and also bringing some specifics from the set, particularly a detailed description of how the urban surfing scenes were filmed.

And by the way, as busy as Jerry is with his directing career, he took the time to ask questions about me and the show before we got started. Not everybody does that. Another good guy.

Interview with Michael Pearlman of Charles in Charge

Show notes: Good guy. You'll probably see me write that about a lot of guests, but the truth is, most of the people who agree to do interviews with me are. What was very cool about Michael though, was that he clearly took the time to check out the site and see and hear what it was all about before making a decision. A lot of people won't make that effort.

All I really want from a guest is enthusiasm and hopefully a good memory. Michael came through with both, which is pretty good considering he was 12 when he played Jason Pembroke on Charles in Charge. He had good insight on the show, a fun behind the scenes story that involved cast members of other well known sitcoms, and good details that I'd never heard before about what everybody wants to know...why the Powells replaced the Pembrokes. What more can you ask if you're a Charles in Charge fan? He even gave the podcast a little mention on his site.

Whatever else I come up with that didn't make it into the actual podcast. It'll also be a great place for you guys to leave comments about each week's episodes if you feel like it. Check back soon!

JMS Format Adjustment

Now that the podcast is getting a bit of a relaunch, I thought I might try adjusting the format a bit. Up until now, I've been putting out "Regular Episodes" that are fully produced with two or more guests, and then bonus interviews and other shorter segments that are generally less produced and usually include just one guest.

Well starting now, I'm gonna try to make it a little more simple and hopefully better by meeting in the middle. As a rule, each new podcast will have one guest, but will hopefully have the same production feel as the previous full episodes. No more "shows" vs. "bonus interviews," although I still may continue to use some names like "Recurring Character Central" and "Famous Fans" if they apply. Here's why I think this will work better for all of us...

The "full episodes," while fun to do, just take a lot of time to produce...and with matching the audio of different guests, recorded under different conditions, don't always sound better for it. It slows down my ability to get more episodes out because of the editing process and it also keeps completed interviews on the shelf longer while I'm waiting for other appropriate guests to match them with. (I don't think I gave away a big secret by letting you know that this is not a live show!) They're also just a bit too long. Most people don't have the time to sit through an hour long podcast, which some of these have become.

Going forward, I'm just gonna throw them all out there together: big names, smaller names, and some names you've never heard of. They'll all come out as regular podcasts, and will vary in length depending on how much there is to cover and how much each guest brings to the plate. The one guest format should generally keep these to a half hour or less, which just makes it a little more conducive to listening on your commute to work or whenever you have a little down time. And if you still want more, great. This should make it a little easier to release new podcasts on a more regular basis. I'm hoping for at least one a week, but we'll see how it goes.

Don't let this little experiment make you think that our mission has changed. It's still all about retro pop culture. In fact, shorter but more frequent podcasts will hopefully give me more flexibility to do some of the more obscure retro stuff that I really like to mix in. To keep up with a regular release schedule, I might even talk with some more people from behind the scenes. I may talk with people who blog about pop culture or run retro websites. Maybe we'll have some recurring guests.

While I obviously still want to land the big name retro stars, that's never been the only goal of the show. When I do "Recurring Character Central" for example, it's not just because I couldn't get the star of the show, although that certainly could be the case. I do it because it's something different and those guests are sometimes the most fun. If I interview the guy who invented the Chipwich, it's not just because Tom Cruse wasn't available. I just really really like chipwiches! I like covering things like "Encyclopedia Brown," that was big when you were growing up, but that you may not have thought about in years. Things that you won't find on every other retro show. So I'll probably do more of that kind of thing.

Of course, I'll still do my best to bring you well known retro actors, and hopefully more athletes and musicians as well. I'll just do whatever I think is fun and interesting. The beauty of one guest per podcast is that you can pick and choose which episodes you want to listen to. That's what I do when I download shows like "The Sound of Young America." Hopefully it will work for us as well.

So that's the plan. Beyond that, we'll just see what happens. We could still put out a longer special on a case by case basis. Or I may come up with something totally new. Let's see how it goes. Don't be afraid to let me know what you think. And of course, all the old stuff will still stay up there for you to listen to in the "reruns" section.

As part of our "Recurring Character Central" series, I talked with Earle Hyman, who played America's favorite grandfather Russell "Slide" Huxtable on "The Cosby Show." Great guy. Check it out. The Michael Essany Story

Long before the internet made it easy for people like me to podcast out of their homes, Michael Essany hosted a local access television show out of his living room. As challenging as it can be for me to get guests to agree to interviews, Michael actually got big name stars like Kevin Bacon and Tom Green to come to him and sit on his couch in Indiana.

The guy was the subject of "The Michael Essany Show" which ran for two season on E!, a guest on "The Tonight Show," and yes, one of the very first guests on "Just My Show." In fact, he's a good guy who's been really nice to this show all around.

Sound good? Then, check out Michael's new e-book "Building A Door." He's a great example of what you can do with a little talent and initiative and I'm sure he has a lot of interesting stories in there to share from it. Great Sports Reading

Pop culture fans love lists. Time magazine just put one out with the 100 Best TV Shows of All Time and The Patriot Ledger's celebrating back to school with their list of the top 20 high school movies of all time.

If you're a sports fan and like this sort of thing, make sure to check out Lester's Legends Sporting Blog. Aside from his great sports commentary, Lester's been busy putting together all kinds of creative lists that you can feel free to debate by leaving comments. The categories include everything from all decade teams to the all time left handed MLB team, to his new kick of ranking all time teams by geographical region of birth. The lastest, the all time Pennsylvania born players, is also published on associated content. We of course love it because his all time teams have some great names from the past. Retro readers will also like The Making of Lester's Legends series for some old school stories you can probably relate to.

Lester's a long time friend, so I could be biased. Other people seem to agree though as he's the most viewed blogger over at The SportingNews.

20 Years of "The Secret of My Success"

True story. Some years back, I desperately wanted a job on “Spin City.” So I did what any good career counselor would tell you. I stuck my face in a copy machine and made a “business card” like Brantley Foster did when he was trying to get a job in “The Secret of My Success.” I took that and a resume and sent it over to Michael J. himself. Oh yeah, and just to give it that extra bit of credibility, I spent fifteen bucks to have a bike messenger deliver it to the studio. Every now and then you hear of this sort of thing working. If it does, you’ve got a great story for your first DVD commentary as a director. If not, you’re in borderline stalker territory. Luckily, no charges were pressed.

Years later, I’m still a huge fan of Michael J. Fox, and I still enjoy “The Secret of My Success.” For that reason, I’m downright ashamed that your friendly host missed the 20th anniversary of the movie’s release this past April. To make up for that inexcusable oversight, Just My Show celebrates today, the 20th anniversary of the film’s release in Finland! Of course, it's no fun to celebrate alone, so Just My Show caught up with Carol Ann Susi, who fans of the movie will remember well as Carlton Whitfield's secretary Jean. TV fans will also remember Carol Ann for her guest spot on one of "Seinfeld's" most memorable episodes. Have a listen...

Caught a little bit of "Can't Buy Me Love" while I was flipping channels over the weekend. (I own the DVD, but somehow felt the need to stop anyway.) If only it had been before my recent talk with Courtney Gains, I would have also had him recite the TV friendly version of his famous line..."You hit on my house!"

I know the studios have to clean it up, but how does that even make sense? Did they trash the house on Halloween or ask it on a date?

20 Years of "Can't Buy Me Love"

My late night party dance of choice has always been the worm. (That and the one where you pick up one leg and put it through the other, but I don’t know what that’s called.) One of these days, though, I’ll have the nerve to break into the African Anteater Ritual. As long as the age range of the room checks out, it can't miss.

I bring this up because it’s time to celebrate another 80's movie milestone. It was 20 years ago this very day that theater goers first saw Patrick Dempsey go from “totally geek to totally sheik” as Ronald Miller in “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

Last fall, Entertainment Weekly named “Can’t Buy Me Love” number 41 in its list of the 50 best High School movies. I’m calling this a little deceptive though as several movies higher on the list are a bit misplaced. EW took "high school" a little too literally on this one. Both “Hoosiers” and “Hoop Dreams” are great movies in which the characters are high school students, but have a much better place on a top sports movies list. For a movie to be on this list, high school life needs to be at the heart of the story. I certainly don't see how a documentary fits in with the spirit of a list topped by “The Breakfast Club” and “Fast Times.” The miscasting goes on, but the bottom line is that "Can't Buy Me Love" got robbed of at least a few rungs. (Feel free to debate the list by leaving comments). Not to worry though. Just My Show is here to show the love.

It’s 20 years later and Patrick Dempsey is totally sheik once again as McDreamy on “Grey’s Anatamy.” But what about Ronald’s best friend Kenneth? You know, the likeable red headed nerd that gave us one of the best movie lines of the 80s. He’s Courtney Gains, and he too, has been working steadily since "Can't By Me Love" ("The Burbs", "Memphis Belle", "Sweet Home Alabama"). Most importantly, he's here to help celebrate the big birthday with us. And yes, we’re gonna try to get him to say it! Have a listen...

Be Kind to the VHS

I recently took a quick look at a Blockbuster Video receipt and caught something I never noticed before. "Be Kind, Return on Time." Sound a little familiar? My first thought was, ouch! One final after the bell cheap shot at the format they've been phasing out for years.

Then it occurred to me. Maybe it's meant as a tribute. A subtle reference in thanks to the little rectangles that put them on the map. In truth, it was probably just one of those notoriously lazy receipt writers recycling ideas like the latest movie remake they're renting. Either way, I'm pretty sure I like it.

Over the last few years, I've thought about upgrading some of my old VHS tapes to DVD. Now I think I might wait a bit. There's something about pulling out an 80's movie on VHS and throwing it in that makes if feel a little more authentic. I even found an old school video store in my neighborhood that will still rent you VHS copies of all the classics Blockbuster doesn't carry in store. (came in very handy when I interviewed Keith Gordon from "Back to School")

Yup, times have changed. The new "Police Academy" movie will probably never wrap itself around the spools like the first six. That's OK. I'm as much for improving things as the next guy. As much as I like the convenience and quality of DVDs though, I'm still gonna hold onto my VCR and those boxes of tapes filled with hand scribbled labels like "Days of Thunder" and "Last Episode of Cheers." Maybe I'm living in the past...but if I wasn't, I would have this killer website!

The "La Bamba" Coin Toss

Hopefully some of you've had a chance to listen to my interview with Lou Diamond Phillips for the 20th anniversary of "La Bamba." This one was great to do in that I could talk about a movie that I really enjoyed as well as the great music of Ritchie Valens that it turned me on to.

One thing I talked about with Lou is the factual accuracy of the film. While it sounds like there was a great effort to portray events correctly, there are usually at least some minor liberties taken in biographical movies for the sake of telling a good story in a short period of time. That being said, I give you the real story behind one of the most important moments in the film. On the actual 20th anniversary of "La Bamba's" release, I chatted with Grammy Award winning musician Tommy Allsup, who lossed the coin toss to Ritchie Valens for the final seat on the tragic flight. 20 Years of "Summer School"

I can't say that I ever had to go to summer school, but I probably came dangerously close once or twice. (Thanks for nothing Mr. Gendreau!) Every June though, some teenager somewhere has to can their big July plans after report cards come out. But since it never happened to me, I'll call it a small sacrifice for inspiring one of the great 80's movies.

Before the film snobs start in, yes, I'm aware that classics like "Raging Bull" and "Rain Man" opened between 1980 and 1989. When I say 80's movies, I mean the fun ones that Roger Ebert loves to tear apart ("Fast Times," "Can't by me Love," etc.), but most of us can just enjoy for what they are.

20 years ago this very day, one of those memorable ones hit theaters. "Summer School," you may forget, was actually directed by comedy legend Carl Reiner and starred Mark Harmon, who's up there in that Tony Danza likability group (who hates Tony Danza?) It gave us a pre-"Cheers" Kirsty Alley and, of course, a great group of subpar students. Yes yes, an early appearance by the beautiful Courtney Thorne-Smith as Pam definitely made (ok, it still makes) this movie even more enjoyable. But it's horror film buff Francis "Chainsaw" Gremp, who leads the classroom anarchy and helps carry the movie. Chainsaw was played by Dean Cameron, who you've also seen in "Men at Work" and the "Fast Times" TV series, among other things. I caught up with the very friendly and VERY honest Dean Cameron in the car, to chat about his time on the "Summer School" set. And here is my first ever graphic language warning! Wa Wa Watch it!

Nobody will come to the defense of scripted television more than me. After all, it's the biggest thing we talk about here and I was as angry as anyone when it started getting phased out by reality television. That doesn't mean some of it's not still fun to watch though. In fact, there's something about VH1's reality programing that almost always get me. (Wait, I know what it is...Emmanuel Lewis sleeping in a bunk bed with MC Hammer. If you can't appreciate that, please see your way to the door.) Now they're at it again with the new series "Scott Baio is 45...and Single."

The basic idea of the show is that Scott Baio, who most people know has had his fair share of lady friends, is trying to get his life in order. To do this, he has to confront the women of his past, while getting guidance from a life coach and support from his buddies (one of which is Jason Hervey from "The Wonder Years," who also produces the show).

Despite a clear lack of interest in sitting around and talking about the good old "Happy Days," the first episode provided some great cameos from Scott's TV past including a face to face sitdown with shortcake herself and a phone chat with the Fonze. From the looks of the coming up preview, there's lots more on the way. If you're visiting this blog, my guess is you'll get a kick out of it.

So does Scott really need to get his head screwed on straight or do people need to cut him a little slack? Who better to ask than his TV mom? Ellen Travolta (John's big sister) played Scott's mother in two different characters over three series ("Happy Days", "Joanie Loves Chachi" and "Charles in Charge.") Have a listen to our chat...

Controversy Surrounds "Project X" Chimp...Again

I’ve been on a bit of a research kick lately, looking for big movie anniversaries to celebrate here in the blog. With that on my mind, when I recently flipped past “Project X” on HBO, I did a quick IMDB search. No, it’s not as memorable as “Fast Times” and some of the others that turn 20 this year, but I was curious. Sure enough, April 17 marked two decades since Matthew Broderick hit theaters with his follow up to “Ferris Bueller.”

Right off the bat, this doesn’t seem like the best choice for a where are they now story. After all, we know that Broderick's had no problem finding work, nor has co-star Helen Hunt. What I didn’t know before last week, though, is that Willie (the chimp who starred as Virgil), is still very much alive. In fact, twenty years later, he’s found himself right in the middle of another controversy. (I didn’t even know there was a first controversy. More on that in a minute.)

After “Project X,” Willie and some of his co-stars were sent to live at Primarily Primates, a non-profit animal sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas. This should be a happy ending for an animal that had previously lived at a biomedical research center. But last year, Primarily Primates found itself the target of accusations over mismanaged money and poor living conditions. In the fall, a Texas judge put Primarily Primates under the temporary control of a receiver, at which time several animals were relocated. Then, in April of this year, a settlement was reached. The agreement barred founder Wallace Swett from any involvement with the fascility and named board member Stephen Tello executive director. In addition, Primarily Primates merged with Connecticut animal rights group Friends of Animals. The story continues, though, with a new law suit involving the return of evacuated animals and settlement objections by PETA, which calls Primarily Primates “hell on earth for animals.”

I called Primarily Primates to request a current photo and update on Willie for this blog. While an employee did verify that Willie currently lives there, I was told such a request would need to go to Stephen Tello. As of this posting, multiple phone messages to Mr. Tello have not been returned.

Back up 20 years to another issue I wasn’t aware of...

“Project X,” the movie that's main character took on the military testing of chimpanzees, had an animal rights controversy of its own. According to animal rights group NEAVS, “training methods were harsh and punitive.” No More Monkey Business, a PETA run website opposing the use of animals in show business, says trainers on the film "allegedly physically and mentally abused the chimpanzee actors." While this apparently made headlines at the time of its release, it’s just not something that was on my radar as an eleven year old. All these years later, there’s little information easily found on the internet about the charges and no response from the filmmakers. With few specifics and no defense available, I wanted to get the point of view of a person who was actually there. This time, I was able to get someone to talk. Here's what Mark Harden, Willie's "Project X," animal trainer, told me...

“The movie making experience was actually a great experience, and I trained Virgil, the lead chimp in it and it was the best relationship I ever had with a chimp. I mean, I loved working that chimp and I had a great relationship with him and it was a shame, the controversy, because I thought the movie was good, the message was good and it was sad that it had so much negative controversy.”

On the fairness of the controversy…
"Is it unfair? I mean everybody has their right to an opinion, you know. Is it founded? It wasn’t, but it was a controversy and it shadowed the whole experience. So, that's the shame that I get out of it, that it overshadowed the experience which I thought was a great experience as an animal trainer. I was a kid. I mean I was…that was 20 damn years ago."

On responding to specific accusations…
"We took the tact that there is no response to it. I mean, it was said by people who weren’t there and, you know, we stopped trying to defend ourselves. We do what we do. We put our positive selves forward and there are people who don’t like what we do and they have always been and will always be there. There’s no defense to them. You know? They just don’t like animals in movies, so that’s fine. I am not spending that 20 years defending what I do. All I do is do what I do as positively as I can. And that’s what we do."

On whether there was anything that made "Project X" different or if it was just about general objections to animals in films...
"Exactly. Exactly. It’s been a long time and I’m not going to defend it. I don’t defend our industry. I don’t defend what we do. I don’t defend, you know, there’s no…for the people who don’t want us to exist, there’s no way we can defend it, so what’s the point? That’s what I learned out of it. The experience hardened my heart a little bit and there was a lot of other controversies involved in it. It opened my eyes. I grew up a lot having gone through that experience. But everything happens for a reason, you know. I mean, it was not pleasant but it was a learning experience and it’s 20 years later."

On whether he'd handle things differently 20 years later...
"I would have not handled my chimp any differently. You know? I would not have handled my chimp any differently because of what people think. I would choose not to work a chimp if I couldn’t handle it the way I thought was the way a chimpanzee needed to be handled. That’s the difference. I maybe wouldn’t have done the movie now looking back 20 years later. It’s not like I would have done my work differently because I think I did my work well. It would have been weather I would have done it or not done it. You know what I mean?"

Further clarification...
"Well I don’t believe I did anything wrong with my chimp, that time or today. If society believes today that handling chimps that way is not anything anybody wants to do, then the choice would be whether I do it or I don’t do it, not weather I did something wrong looking back 20 years. I don’t think I handled the chimps wrong, not today, not yesterday, not if it was a hundred years before. Whether society wants us to do it or not, that’s up to society, you know, and if you can’t work a chimp, then don’t work a chimp. That’s the way it pretty much boils down to."

No, my chat didn't uncover all that much in terms of facts from 20 years ago (we’re not exactly known for our investigative journalism here), but I should say that Mr. Harden could not have been more courteous or patient as I attempted to ask him the same question over and over again in different ways. At least he took my call, which is more than Mr. Tello was willing to do. Unfortunately, since Harden didn’t own Willie, he wasn’t able to fill in any of the blanks about his current situation. As he put it, "I was just a kid training a monkey on a movie.”

I don’t claim to be qualified to pass judgment on either story. The fact that Mr. Tello has not returned my calls, certainly does not mean that the accusations are true. It does, unfortunately, stop me from doing what I initially intended to do…simply give an update on Willie, the unlikely star of an 80s movie. So feel free to read up and form your own opinion. Me? I just hope Willie's ok. I’m off to set my DVR for the subject of my next entry…"Scott Baio is 45...and Single." What else do you want from me? I’m just a kid writing a blog about a monkey in a movie.

Cool Off With a Chipwich

It's hot out there this week. We're talking triple digits in some parts of the West and so hot in the East that New York City is on blackout watch. No doubt people everywhere are heading for their freezers or running for the ice cream truck. (I'm sorry, but if you don't still get at least a little excited when you hear the ice cream truck coming, you're not someone I want to associate with!)

Lots of choices my friends: the ice cream sandwich, the fudgsicle, the creamsicle, the chocolate eclair. But I ask you, is there any more reliable than the Chipwich? Such a simple idea. Such a classic. That's why I was so surprised when I learned that the Chipwich has only been on the market for about 25 years. Seriously, can you imagine a time without the Chipwich? (Yes, as someone who's been known to down one or two before noon, I may be a little biased.)

I was also happy to find out that despite being currently produced by Nestle, the Chipwich was not created in a big corporate boardroom, but by a regular guy right here in New York. It started in a small ice cream shop, gained a following in push carts around the city and then invaded freezers everywhere. It's often duplicated, but there's only one original. Despite the fact that he's no longer directly involved with the product he put on the map, Chipwich inventor Richard LaMotta (seen with his stand) was nice enough to share his cool story on this scorching summer day.

Battle For The Backyard

With July 4th coming up, odds are you might be headed out to a backyard BBQ. If your friends are like mine, it's only a matter of time before you break out some of the classic games you grew up playing. So the question I put out to you now...what is the greatest backyard game you played as a kid, that still makes for a great time when you're hanging out with your buddies now? We're looking for one or more of the following: nostalgia, chill out factor and ability for serious backyard rivalry and competition if desired.

Let's throw a few off the list right away. In my personal experience, I haven't seen a whole lot of croquet in my post college years, nor have I seen a whole lot of people over ten playing scoop ball (not sure I ever really knew what it was called in the first place). On the reverse end, I don't think bocce ever had mainstream appeal with the under ten crowd and just to cover all our bases...Slip N' Slide and the long discontinued Wet Banana are backyard classics, but not games. (If you do plan on breaking these out though, beware of roots. I can still feel those bad slides all these years later.)

So here for your consideration is the field for Just My Show's Battle For The Backyard: WIFFLE Ball, Frisbee and horseshoes.
